1970s South Armagh, heartland of the Provisional IRA and bandit country for the British Army. Despite his republican father’s wishes, Seanie O’Rourke is determined not to get involved in the bloody conflict. But when he too becomes a victim, where can he turn? Based on actual events, and with a colourful cast of characters – informers, smugglers, psychopathic Vietnam vets, alcoholic lawyers, political prisoners and sharp-witted barflies – A Fight for Freedom is the harrowing yet ultimately uplifting story of one young man’s struggle to remain true to his values against all the odds.

This is one of the rare novels that describe what it was really like to be a young person living in the north of Ireland in the 1970’s. It portrays the personal story of a young man and women trying to get on with their lives amid the growing conflict. It does not glorify the IRA, but Mr. Murphy shows just how the British government’s brutal response to nationalist aspirations was the best recruiting ground for the IRA. If you were in South Armagh during that period you would have met any number of the local characters depicted in this book. An excellent read.Product details

A Fight For Freedom Oliver Murphy 9780993191701 Books Reviews
I picked this book up not knowing what to expect, it's not the type of book I would normally read, but I was really surprised at the pace of the story, it fairly zips along with great characters and of course the added addition of been based on real events, this is a book of its time and the time is the 70s in bandit country otherwise known as South Armagh, ...Seanie o'Rourke is doing a bit of smuggling which is a favourite pastime in that part of the world...since the partition of Ireland in the 1920s there has always been smuggling going both ways depending on what was available, unfortunately for Seanie he was operating in one of the most militarised parts of Europe and that's were his trouble starts, the local IRA expect him to live up to his father's reputation as he was a bit of a local hero, but Seanie has no heed in it,all he wants to do is earn a few bob and avoid the local military and police but like many a young man he was sucked in by the brutality of the military ,so begins a great story ..without giving the ending away I can say that this is as good as a John Grisham novel and also has a lot in common with Sebastian Barry's book ...The Whereabouts of Eneas Mc Nulty as the main character in this book is caught up in something that in another time would be regarded as relatively harmless but because of the situation in Ireland has deadly consequences. .I would rate this book as good as Barrys and Barrys book was rated by some critics in America as the greatest book to come out of Europe in the year it was published 1999 ..so in summary do you self a favour and sit down and read this book it's a great read ...the best compliment I can give this book is that I read it in 2 sessions
This a 'MUST READ' book. A true insight into growing up in the 'troubles' in Northern Ireland. A gripping picture of the complexities of family life at that time. There is humour, sadness and fear in every page.
Highly recommended
This extremely well written book is a great insight into what life was like growing up during the troubles. Its about one mans struggle for freedom, freedom against a corrupt regime It taps into all emotions especially if one lived through these horrific times There was nothing normal about growing up in Northern Ireland This book is a must have
A Fight For Freedom,by Irish author Oliver Murphy, was recommended by a friend, started reading it night before heading away on holidays.I was hooked from page 1,-So hard to put down, based on actual events in 1970s South Armagh during the troubles.A young man Seanie O'Rourke, trying not to get involved in the conflict in Northern Ireland -but how can he not?-An array of characters, exciting, funny, tense, emotional, with a wonderful unexpected twist-all i love in a good thriller!!-it would make a great movie -thank you Mr.Murphy for a wonderful read .
I would give this book six stars, if I could. I picked this book up the other day, on a whim. Its not the kind of book I would go for, but something made my hand reach out and take it down from the shelf.
I was hard pushed to recognise the place Oliver Murphy was describing as Ireland. Although I grew up during the height of the troubles, I was blessed to be sheltered from the daily torture endured by all the people of the north and border counties. This book is based in a Republican community, but you wont find any blind rhetoric for the cause, between these pages. If anything, this book is about the struggle of the individual to exist when enormous powers are trying to enforce all to conform.
I won't spill the story, that would do this book an injustice. Let me just say, I have lost a whole nights sleep, just to get to the end, and I am still smiling about it. Fantastic job Mr Murphy, fantastic.
